ANNOUNCING The First Annual Upper Midwest Institute of Buddhist Studies

“The Psychology of Experience:

Buddhist Maps of the Mind”

The Psychology of Experience: Buddhist Maps of the Mind

Unlike most Western approaches, Buddhist psychology analyzes the mind and body from the inside out. Thoroughly subjective in its orientation, it is a science of the mind that is grounded in the empirical observations of meditation. Early Buddhist texts offer a sophisticated--and remarkably post-modern--model of experience which reveals the extent to which each of us, moment by moment, constructs a world and then reflexively inhabits it with a self. Of particular interest to psychologists, social workers, educators and healers, this course outlines the core ideas of Buddhist psychology in a way that is accessible to all, and investigates these teachings in light of contemporary psychology and modern cognitive science. We cover such ideas as the sense spheres and aggregates, the dynamics of intention and action, the doctrines of interdependent origination and non-self, the transformative value of mindfulness, and the process of gradually releasing the mind from the influence of its inherent toxins. Meditation practice is integrated into the course, both in short sessions during the day and in a more sustained way each evening, as a means of exploring the basic ideas directly in one's own experience.
